Abstract:We report on a study of various RVO 3 single-crystal samples (R = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er and Y) which show temperature-induced magnetization reversal. For compounds with lighter rare-earths (R = La, Nd and Sm), magnetization reversal can be observed for magnetic field applied in the ab plane and along the c axis, whereas for the heavy rare-earths (R = Gd, Er) magnetization reversal is only observed when the field is applied along the a axis. YVO 3 has a magnetization reversal along all the main crystallographic axes in a modest applied field. We have found that some compounds are very sensitive to small trapped fields present in the superconducting solenoid of the magnetometer during the cooling. Based on the observed results, we argue that inhomogeniety caused by defects in the orbital sector in the quasi onedimensional orbital systems could account for the unusual magnetization reversal.

Abstract:We report a novel feature of the temperature induced magnetization jump observed along the a-axis of the GdVO 3 single crystal at temperature T M ≈ 8 K.Below T M , the compound shows no coercivity and remanent magnetization indicating a homogenous antiferromagnetic structure. However, we will demonstrate that the magnetic state below T M is indeed history dependent and it shows up in different jumps in the magnetization only when warming the sample through T M . Such a magnetic memory effect is highly unusual and suggesting different domain arrangements in the supposedly homogenous antiferromagnetic phase of the compound.

The coexistence at low temperature in YVO 3 and LaVO 3 of two competing phases with defined orbital and spin orientations is studied by Raman spectroscopy. The temperature evolution of the phonons indicates that phase coexistence, due to strain in YVO 3 and fluctuations in LaVO 3 , is not restricted to small R ionic radius in RVO 3 compounds. Also, a typical temperature at 50 K is inferred from the temperature dependence of the intensities in LaVO 3 .
