Yb2Pt2Pb: Magnetic frustration in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Abstract: We have synthesized single crystals of Yb 2 Pt 2 Pb, which crystallize in the layered U 2 Pt 2 Sn-type structure, where planes of Yb ions lie on a triangular network. Here, we report the results of magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity experiments. The lattice constants and high temperature magnetic susceptibility indicate that the Yb ions are trivalent, while the Schottky peaks in the specific heat show that the ground state is a well isolated doublet. A significant magnetic anisotropy is o… Show more

“…4T for ErB 4 , with a clear step at 1/2M sat . Similar scenario was invoked in Yb 2 Pt 2 Pb [6] which orders AF at T M ≈ 2 K. Within the Mo 2 B 2 Fe type structure there is a large family of compounds with the formula R 2 T 2 X, being T a transition metal and X a p-metal. In this structure, the magnetic atoms 'R' are disposed in a unique crystalline lattice.…”

“…There are presently many other strongly frustrated cerium and ytterbium compounds, like CePdAl [75], Ce 2 Pd 2 Sn [78] or Yb 2 Pt 2 Pb [80]. The present study of the frustration in heavy fermion compounds is a positive feature of the Kondo lattice, because it yields the existence of a second non-magnetic phase which originates from the peculiar situation of the coupling of localized spins on 2 sites along the diagonal bond.…”

“…Yb 2 Pd 2 Sn possesses a tetragonal crystal structure with two types of layers that alternatively stack along c -axis. Another scenario based on the geometrical frustration forming the Shastry-Sutherland lattice 18 has been proposed, beyond the normal framework of competition between the RKKY interaction and the Kondo effect 19 . Still, the precise origin of the two QCPs in Yb 2 Pd 2 Sn is not fully elucidated.…”
