“…Our previously published papers showed that PBDEs can disrupt ovarian steroidogenesis (Gregoraszczuk Q2 et al, 2008a,b;Karpeta and Gregoraszczuk, 2010). Moreover, we showed differences in the action of the parent compound, BDE-47, and its hydroxylated metabolites on ovarian steroidogenesis.…”

“…Subchronic exposures to aluminum resulted in reduced serum progestogen concentrations in Wistar rats (Alonso et al 2010). Certain PBDEs have been shown to decrease P 4 synthesis in mouse Leydig tumor cells (Han et al 2012) while other PBDEs have been shown to increase P 4 synthesis in the ovarian follicles of pigs (Karpeta & Gregoraszczuk 2010). Proposed mechanisms of action in the latter study include modulation of key steroidogenic genes, many of which are highly conserved among vertebrates (Karpeta et al 2011).…”

“…Results from our laboratory have shown an increase in the P4/testosterone (T) ratio but a decrease in the T/E2 ratio, in ovarian follicles suggesting premature luteinization of antral follicles. Removal of the PBDE mixture from cell cultures did not reverse adverse effects [22]. In a follow-up study, we reported changes in the levels of steroidogenic enzymes (e.g., 17 β -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 β -HSD), cytochrome P450, family 17, subfamily A, polypeptide 1 (CYP17), and aromatase (CYP19)) by PBDE congeners 47, 99, and 100 [23].…”
