Mixed Tumors Of The Skin Of The Salivary Gland Type: A Light And Electron Microscopic Study

Abstract: The light and electron microscopic features of two mixed tumors of the skin of the salivary gland type demonstrate eccrine differentiation of the epithelial component. The tumors were made up of tuboalveolar spaces lined by an eccrine duct type of epithelium with luminal cells showing numerous microvilli. The mesenchymal elements were fibroblasts and chondrocytes embedded in a mucous and chondroid matrix. Groups of undifferentiated cells without eccrine differentiation but with ultrastructural features suggest… Show more

“…The first of these markers is seen with greatest frequency in apocrine cells of the breast and skin; however, it also has been documented in salivary glands (see below), submucosal bronchial glands of the airways, and the prostate nary 1998 2 ' 6,32 " 42 This distribution is consonant with the knowledge that those very sites may play host to closely similar neoplastic phenotypes, not only including ductal carcinomas but also such rumors as adenoid cystic carcinoma and pleomorphic adenoma. 43 " 45 In the setting of carcinomas that present with metastases in the absence of a known primary lesion, or, alternatively, simultaneous neoplasms in the breast and in other locations capable of harboring metastases of breast carcinoma, GCDFP-15 has proved to be helpful in substantiating a m a m m a r y origin. Previous studies on this point have affirmed the relatively high degree of specificity of this protein, which is seen in 60% to 75% of breast cancers regardless of histologic subtype.…”

“…As a skin tumor, it is sometimes called a "chondroid syringoma" or "mixed tumor." However, it is histologically identical to PA located in the salivary glands [3,8].…”
