Mixed phenotypic (T cell/B cell) lymphoblastic lymphoma of synovium, report of the first case with discussion on potential diagnostic pitfalls

Abstract: Mixed- phenotype acute leukaemia (MPAL) is very rare and accounts for less than 4% of acute leukaemia. Most cases of MPAL described in literature, are of T/myeloid or B/myeloid phenotype. MPAL T/B cell lineage is exceptional and occasional cases reported so far, are leukaemia with bone marrow involvement. Our case, on immunophenotyping, exhibited evidence of T and B- Lymphoid lineage. It could be diagnosed neither as MPAL, because the bone marrow was not involved, nor as lymphoblastic lymphoma because of the b… Show more

“…After extensive search, we found only 25 cases of extramedullary mixed phenotypic hematolymphoid neoplasms reported so far, of which 12 cases were B/myeloid, 10 were T/myeloid, and only three were (B/T). 4,[7][8][9][10][11] Our case is the 4th one to be reported amongst (B/T) category (Table 1).…”

“…6 The MPAL-B/T is described under MPAL rare subtypes and represents 6% of all MPAL cases reported. 7 The majority of the cases have marrow involvement and present as acute leukemia. After extensive search, we found only 25 cases of extramedullary mixed phenotypic hematolymphoid neoplasms reported so far, of which 12 cases were B/myeloid, 10 were T/myeloid, and only three were (B/T).…”
