Mixed Methods Adolescent Research

Abstract

The aim of this entry is to define and accentuate the importance of mixed methods research in the context of studying adolescence. First, it discusses why mixed methods research is a particularly advantageous approach when studying adolescence, and the numerous implications it has for increasing scientific understanding of this complex developmental period. It then provides an overview of mixed methods research, defining different methodologies commonly used in mixed methods studies, including quantitative and qualitative approaches in addition to other unique “methods,” such as technological interventions. It explains how these different methods are combined into a single research study to draw balanced conclusions, and highlight the strengths and account for the limitations of different research approaches. Case examples are presented to provide a realistic and practical perspective on the process of conducting mixed methods research with adolescents.
