Lanthanum ion (La(3+)) has been reported to affect proliferation or apoptosis of different cells. In the present study, La(3+) was confirmed to promote both proliferation and apoptosis of NIH 3T3 cells at the same concentrations. La(3+) was shown to promote proliferation by helping the cells to pass through the G1/S restriction point and enter S phase, however, the proliferating cells induced by incubation with La(3+) eventually underwent apoptosis. The proliferation and apoptosis of NIH 3T3 cells induced by La(3+) were well correlated with cell cycle alterations. La(3+) caused the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2; while inhibition of ERK phosphorylation by 2'-amino-3'-methoxyflavone (PD98059) suppressed both proliferation and apoptosis induced by La(3+). Based on the above experimental results, we postulated that La(3+)-promoted proliferation of NIH 3T3 cells could be interconnected with the cell apoptosis, possibly through cell cycle machinery. Our results thus support the recent hypothesis that proliferation and apoptosis of cell are intrinsically coordinated.

It has been demonstrated that the organic damages of animals can be caused by exposure to lanthanide oxides or compounds. However, the molecular mechanism of CeCl3 -induced kidney injury remains unclear. In this study, the mechanism of nephric damage in mice induced by an intragastric administration of CeCl3 was investigated. The results showed that Ce(3+) was accumulated in the kidney, which in turn led to oxidative stress, severe nephric inflammation, and dysfunction in mice. Furthermore, CeCl3 activated nucleic factor κB, which in turn increased the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor α, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, interleukin-2, interleukin-4, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, interleukin-10, interleukin-18, interleukin-1β, cross-reaction protein, transforming growth factor-β, interferon-γ, and CYP1A1, while suppressed heat shock protein 70 expression. These findings implied that Ce(3+) -induced kidney injury of mice might be associated with oxidative stress, alteration of inflammatory cytokine expression, and reduction of detoxification of CeCl3 .

High Sensitive Sensor Based on Carbon Nanotube Electrode for Determination of Lanthanum in the Presence of Calcon Carboxylic Acid

In this paper we have investigated the electrochemical activity of lanthanum chloride (La (III)) in the presence of calcon carboxylic acid (CCA) using a multi-walled carbon nano tube/carbon paste electrode (CNT/CPE). The peak current increases linearly with increasing of the La (III) concentration. For this purpose, a few electrochemical methods such as cyclic, differential pulse voltammetry, linear sweep and hydrodynamic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry were used. The results show that calcon carboxylic acid as a ligand was useful for determination of La (III) and was able to improve its sensitivity. Cyclic voltammetry was used for study of reduction reaction of La (III) at the surface of modified electrode. The electrochemical parameters for La (III) at the surface of CNT/CPE, such as diffusion coefficient (D/ cm 2 s À1 ¼ 5.26 Â 10 À6 ), the electron transfer coefficient, (a ¼ 0. 43), and the reduction rate constant, (k/ M s À1 ¼ 2.33 (AE0.015) Â 10 2 ), were determined using voltammetry methods, which with the detection limit of La (III) by differential pulse voltammetry was found to be 1.3 nM. The combination of CCA with CNT as mediators in carbon paste electrode showed that this electrode is capable, sensitive, and simple to quantify La (III) in real samples with an average recovery of 97.64%.
