Existing color editing algorithms enable users to edit the colors in an image according to their own aesthetics. Unlike artists who have an accurate grasp of color, ordinary users are inexperienced in color selection and matching, and allowing non-professional users to edit colors arbitrarily may lead to unrealistic editing results. To address this issue, we introduce a palette-based approach for realistic object-level image recoloring. Our data-driven approach consists of an offline learning part that learns the color distributions for different objects in the real world, and an online recoloring part that first recognizes the object category, and then recommends appropriate realistic candidate colors learned in the offline step for that category. We also provide an intuitive user interface for efficient color manipulation. After color selection, image matting is performed to ensure smoothness of the object boundary. Comprehensive evaluation on various color editing examples demonstrates that our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art color editing algorithms.

Recent works showed that floating polygons can be an interesting alternative to traditional superpixels, especially for analyzing scenes with strong geometric signatures, as man-made environments. Existing algorithms produce homogeneously-sized polygons that fail to capture thin geometric structures and over-partition large uniform areas. We propose a kinetic approach that brings more flexibility on polygon shape and size. The key idea consists in progressively extending pre-detected line-segments until they meet each other. Our experiments demonstrate that output partitions both contain less polygons and better capture geometric structures than those delivered by existing methods. We also show the applicative potential of the method when used as preprocessing in object contouring.

Video recoloring via spatial-temporal geometric palettes

Color correction and color grading are important steps in film production. Recent palette-based approaches to image recoloring have shown that a small set of representative colors provide an intuitive set of handles for color adjustment. However, a single, static palette cannot represent the time-varying colors in a video. We introduce a spatial-temporal geometry-based approach to video recoloring. Specifically, its core is a 4D skew polytope with a few vertices that approximately encloses the video pixels in color and time, which implicitly defines time-varying palettes through slicing of the 4D skew polytope at specific time values. Our geometric palette is compact, descriptive, and provides a correspondence between colors throughout the video, including topological changes when colors merge or split. Experiments show that our method produces natural, artifact-free recoloring.
