Mitrofanoff Principle for Continent Urinary Diversion

Abstract: In 1980 Mitrofanoff described a method to achieve continent urinary diversion by surgically closing the bladder neck and creating a continent catheterizable stoma from the appendix which had been implanted in a nonrefluxing manner into the bladder or from a nonrefluxing distal ureter. The Mitrofanoff principle (MP) serves well as a continence mechanism for either the native bladder or intestinal reservoirs. We review 17 patients, including 10 children, who were treated with the MP and received a continent cath… Show more

“…Although our continence rate of 85.7 % (36/42) seems similar to other series, there are series in which continence rates are reported to be as high as 98% (4,15,19). The majority of our incontinent patients belong to the exstrophy-epispadias group of patients and the difference between continence rates can be explained by the nature of the diseases for which the procedure was performed.…”

“…Despite all the modifications of the technique, CUD with the Mitrofanoff principle remains a complex procedure with a significant non-negligible complication rate (14). This surgical reconstruction technique has been described for pediatric and adult patients (15).…”
