Mitranian functionalism: possible or impossible?

Abstract: In the April 1984 issue of this journal, Mark Imber resurrected Mitranian functionalism. His well-reasoned elucidation of David Mitrany's writings and of the writings of Mitrany's major critics ended in five propositions for further research. Unfortunately, one cannot be sure that these five propositions represent Mitranian functionalism or a new species of functionalism, Imberian functionalism. In any case, the five propositions hardly advance our knowledge of functionalism, even if they are only intended to … Show more

Cultural norms, ideology and material self-interest are among the factors that may help shape how different actors prefer to address a given need.…”

“…Mitrany era escéptico de entregar amplios poderes supranacionales a estos equipos de trabajo, su función en todo caso era crear experiencias y conocimientos para atender problemas muy específicos comunes a una región. Su oposición al supranacionalismo y al federalismo como mecanismos para llegar a la integración hicieron obsoleto su enfoque (McLaren, 1985).…”

“…But beyond these terminologies, ‘integrateness’ and ‘regionness’ are intellectual social forces that draw inspiration from the ‘democratic peace hypothesis’ as advanced by Levy (1994) as the link between liberalism and cooperation. David Mitrany’s (McLaren, 1985) functionalism is not a radical departure from this framework of thinking. On this account, there is a point of convergence between the RIT’s propositions and the institutionalist approaches to thinking regional integration.…”
