“…To date, transcatheter mitral or tricuspid valve implantation has only shown success in acute and short-term experimental settings (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19). The first trans-atrial mitral valve implantation of a double-crowned valved stent and a subsequent observation period of 30 minutes following stent deployment was reported by von Segesser and colleagues in 2005 (14).…”

“…Seventeen animals were observed for a period of 60 minutes after implantation of the mitral valved stent (study group A: 60 min observation period) (15,16). Another 13 animals were observed for a period of seven days after implantation (study group B: Seven day observation period) (17,18). Only in vitro tested valved stents with a very low pressure gradient and a regurgitation of less than grade I were used for transcatheter mitral valve implantation in vivo.…”

“…[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] During first studies, 30 pigs underwent off-pump mitral valved stent implantation with followup times of 60 minutes and 7 days. Accurate positioning was established in all but 5 animals.…”

“…In addition to this unparalleled success in the development of EJCTS [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10], Ludwig von Segesser launched a second publication in September 2002, Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS). This interactive Journal is available to the reader in both a printed and an online version.…”
