Mitogen-activated protein kinase 6 negatively regulates secondary wall biosynthesis by modulating MYB46 protein stability in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: The R2R3-MYB transcription factor MYB46 functions as a master switch for secondary cell wall biosynthesis, ensuring the exquisite expression of the secondary wall biosynthetic genes in the tissues where secondary walls are critical for growth and development. At the same time, suppression of its function is needed when/where formation of secondary walls is not desirable. Little is known about how this opposing control of secondary cell wall formation is achieved. We used both transient and transgenic expressio… Show more

“…As components of complexes, MAPKs and MYBs participate in different biological development processes in plants. Mitogen-activated protein kinase 6 negatively regulates SCW biosynthesis by modulating MYB46 protein stability in Arabidopsis ( Im et al, 2021 ). MYB75 phosphorylation by MPK4 is required for light-induced anthocyanin accumulation in Arabidopsis ( Li et al, 2016 ).…”

“…In Populus , the phosphorylation of PdLTF1 (an MYB transcription factor) by PdMPK6 is the key to regulate lignin accumulation in response to environmental stimuli (Gui et al, 2019). Secondary cell wall biosynthesis is regulated by MPK6 phosphorylation and the degradation of MYB46 in Arabidopsis (Im et al, 2021). Therefore, a MYB4a degradation pathway in plants may alleviate the inhibition of the CsMYB4a-CsIAA4 complex.…”

“…GUS conjugated MYB46 promoter was used as previously reported (Jong Hee Im et al, 2021). For generation of MYC2 overexpressing plant, cDNA of MYC2 was cloned into pDONR/Zeo (Thermo Fisher Scientific) and LR reaction was carried out with pEarleygate201.…”
