MITNS: Multiple-Ion Transport Numerical Solver for Magnetized Plasmas

E. J. Kolmes,
I. E. Ochs,
N. J. Fisch

Abstract: MITNS (Multiple-Ion Transport Numerical Solver) is a new numerical tool designed to perform 1D simulations of classical cross-field transport in magnetized plasmas. Its detailed treatment of multi-species effects makes it a unique tool in the field. We describe the physical model it simulates, as well as its numerical implementation and performance.

“…The SNeuT simulation code uses the CVODE package, an open source software package which is part of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's SUNDIALS suite. SNeuT is a fork of the MITNS plasma transport code [21]. Authors are thankful to Eric Emdee, Mike Mlodik, and Jace Waybright for fruitful discussions, and to Ian Ochs for fruitful discussions and for involvement in code development.…”

“…In contrast to neutral gas, however, magnetized multi-ion species plasma features multiple heating mechanisms, so the temperature profile can be tailored by modifying the exter-nal potential and plasma parameters. These properties of magnetized multi-ion-species plasma were successfully observed with the code MITNS [7].…”
