Mitigation of power system forced oscillations based on unified power flow controller

Abstract: Forced oscillations (FOs), or low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) caused by periodic, continuous, small power disturbances, threaten the security and stability of power systems. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can effectively mitigate LFOs via stability control. We propose a novel method that mitigates FOs by shifting the resonant frequency. Based on the features of the linearized swing equation of a generator, a resonant frequency shift can be achieved by controlling the synchronous torque coeff… Show more

“…A STACOM has been suggested with higher order sliding mode controller for the stability enhancement [10]. The low-frequency oscillations and forced oscillations mitigation have been done with FACTS devices with energy source [11], by shifting the resonating frequency of the system using UPFC [12]. The oscillations injected into the system due to the installation of wind farm and PV plant have been controlled by facts devises and coordinated with PSS using adaptive velocity update relaxation particle swarm optimization (AVURPSO) algorithm and compared with genetic algorithm (GA) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA) [13] and by using energy-storage unit based on the supercapacitor (SC) [14].…”

“…This approach is effective in reducing the impact of power reference variations and grid disturbances on RES. In addition, a UPFC can provide further benefits in the operation of the power system through oscillation suppression [24]. The frequency VSG control strategy was attempted to apply to UPFC/BESS [25], which supplies virtual inertia and damping to eliminate the impact of active power fluctuations on the point of common coupling (PCC).…”

“…Compared to NO, FO initiates and spreads more rapidly, and has a much higher amplitude. Therefore, FO can produce more harmful effects than NO [14]. Several research works have been carried out to locate the source of FO in power system so corrective actions can be taken.…”
