Mitigation of negative ecological and socio-economic impacts of the Diama dam on the Senegal River Delta wetland (Mauritania), using a model based decision support system

Abstract: The delta of the River Senegal was modified substantially by the construction of the Diama dam in 1986 and the floodplain and estuarine areas on the Mauritanian bank were affected severely by the absence of floods. In 1994, managed flood releases were initiated in the Bell basin (4000 ha) of the Diawling National Park, as part of a rehabilitation effort. The basin was designated as a joint management area between traditional users and the Park authority and a revised management plan was developed through a par… Show more

“…Albeit the environmental consequences are an indispensable issue of grave concern encompassing the establishment of cutting edge dams, the communal and health implications specifically expatriation questions are the recent impacts that troubled individuals (AP) are confronted with even before dam construction gets to its finality stage (Duvail & Hamerlynck, 2003;Raschid-Sally, Akoto-Danso, Kalitsi, Ofori & Koranteng, 2008).…”

“…In particular, dam construction has altered many wetlands throughout Africa, such as those of the Senegal River Delta in Mauritania (Duvail and Hamerlynck, 2003) and in Senegal (Lamagat et al, 1996;Bader et al, 2003), the Inner Delta of the Niger River in Mali, the Waza Logone in Cameroon (Loth, Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union.…”

“…And there have been relatively few studies on wetland system, mainly on hydrological impact assessment methods of wetlands (Middleton et al, 2002;Duvail et al, 2003;Acreman et al, 2004Acreman et al, , 2005, and evaluating influence of human activities on wetlands water use (Bennett et al, 1993;Newbold et al, 1997;Roberts et al, 2000;Voogt et al, 2000;Robertson et al, 2002;Mayer et al, 2004). Researches on ecological water requirement started late in China, but rapidly developed in recent years.…”
