Mitigation of membrane fouling of alginate with combined actions of aeration and powdered activated carbon: Fouling behaviors and mechanisms

Abstract: A laboratory-scale flat-sheet ceramic microfiltration membrane system was developed to investigate the membrane fouling behaviors and mechanisms of sodium alginate (SA) in the presence of aeration and powdered activated carbon (PAC). When the SA concentration increased from 20 to 500 mg/L, the permeate flux decreased by 81.7%, and the transmembrane pressure (TMP) and resistance increased 1.7 and 24.5 times, respectively.
