Mistrust in biomedical research and vaccine hesitancy: the forefront challenge in the battle against COVID-19 in Italy

Abstract: Researchers have been working quickly and collaboratively for the development of vaccines against the COVID-19 virus. The effort of the scientific community in searching a vaccine for COVID-19 may be hampered by a diffused vaccine hesitancy. Two waves of data collection on representative samples of the Italian population (during the "first" and "second" phase of the Italian Covid-19 mitigation strategy) were conducted to understand citizens' perceptions and behaviors about preventive behaviors willingness to v… Show more

“…Consistent with the present study, other studies appearing after our study had been completed have found that vaccination hesitancy is associated with negative attitudes toward a SARSCoV2 vaccine, including concerns about safety and efficacy (Fisher et al, 2020;Neumann-Böhme et al, 2020;Palamenghi et al, 2020), and doubts about the necessity for vaccination (Dodd et al, 2020). Findings from the present study, along with results from previous studies, have important implications for public policy.…”

“…pandemic [24,73]. Thus, estimates of vaccine acceptance rates can be helpful to plan actions and intervention measures necessary to increase the awareness and assure people about the safety and benefits of vaccines, which in turn would help to control virus spread and alleviate the negative effects of this unprecedented pandemic [74,75].…”

“…However, a major hindrance to achieving proper vaccination and eventual herd immunity can be vaccine hesitancy among the general public [ 23 ]. Vaccine hesitancy is becoming an important obstacle for preventive strategies for combating infectious diseases, and is seen frequently for the prospective SARS-CoV-2 vaccines [ 24 , 25 ]. In addition, a sole dependence on vaccination can result in a worse outcome if other protection strategies are ignored [ 26 ].…”
