Background: Aging is an inevitable biological phenomenon. Today, the elderly have a more active life, better life expectancy, and health status than in the past in Iran. However, there are still a lot of related hidden problems such as the elderly abuse. Objectives: The current study aimed at determining different types of the elder abuse in Shiraz, Iran. Methods: The current cross sectional study was conducted in 2012. The study population included the elderly in Shiraz, Iran. A sample of 226 elderly was randomly selected from 7 urban health centers. Data were collected using domestic elder abuse questionnaire. Data were analyzed by performing descriptive statistics (mean, frequency percentage, and standard deviation), the Pearson correlation, and the Mann-Whitney test by SPSS.

Fear of crime and psychological and physical abuse associated with ill health in a Swedish population aged 65–84 years

ObjectivesThe objective of the paper was to assess the association between experiencing fear of crime and/or psychological and/or physical abuse in relation to self-reported physical and psychological health, using a large representative sample of elderly women and men in Sweden. Study designCross-sectional national survey MethodsData were taken from a nationwide representative public health survey (2006). Men and women between the ages of 65 and 84 were selected for the analyses in the study, which comprised 4,386 men and 4,974 women. The response rate for this age group was 59% for men and 70% for women. ResultsPsychological and physical abuse against elderly women and men produced raised odd ratios for negative health outcomes, independently of socio-economic status. Strong correlation between psychological abuse and negative health outcomes was found in both men and women, while physical abuse showed less significantly raised odds ratios, especially among women. The men in particular had high odds ratios for suicidal thoughts and even for attempted suicide in connection with physical and psychological abuse and fear of crime. ConclusionsThe study provides representative results addressing an extensive negative health outcome panorama caused by fear of crime and exposure to abuse.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to compare recent developments in adult protection legislation, policy and practice in Scotland in 2015 with the first attempts at adult protection of adults at risk of harm, in 1857-62, with a particular focus on people with learning disabilities.Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses comparative historical research, drawing on primary archive material from 1857-62 in the form of Annual Reports of the General Board of Commissioners in Lunacy for Scotland and associated papers.Findings: Growing public awareness of the extent of neglect and abuse, and the need for overarching legislation were common factors in the development of both the "The Lunacy Act" of 1857 and the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act of 2007. Both pieces of legislation also had the common aim of "asylum", and shared some other objectives.Practical implications: Total prevention of abuse of vulnerable adults is an aspiration in law and in policy. There is an evidence base of effectiveness however in protecting adults at risk of harm from abuse. Some ecological factors recur as challenges to effective safeguarding activity. These include problems of definition, uncovering abuse, enforcing legislation, evaluating impact, and protection of people who are not a risk of harm to others. Originality/value: This paper compares common themes and common challenges in two separate time periods to investigate what can be learned about development of legislation and practice in adult protection.The research was funded by the Carnegie Foundation in Scotland.
