Misidentification ofCandida guilliermondiiasC. famataamong Strains Isolated from Blood Cultures by the VITEK 2 System

Abstract: Introduction. The aim of this study was to differentiate between Candida famata and Candida guilliermondii correctly by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and gene sequencing. Methods. Twenty-eight Candida strains from blood cultures that had been identified as C. famata (N = 25), C. famata/C. guilliermondii (N = 2), and C. guilliermondii (N = 1) by the VITEK 2 system using the YST ID card were included. We identified these strains by MALDI-TOF MS … Show more

“…The Vitek-2 Compact system performed poorly in the identification of the 164 C. guilliermondii isolates, with only 15.2% of isolates correctly identified to the species level, which is similar to the results of previous studies (16,17). Furthermore, there was also a low discrimination rate of 74.4% (122 isolates) between C. famata and C. guilliermondii, and 10.4% (17 isolates) was misidentified as C. famata.…”

“…Though the VITEK 2 system is popularly used in clinical microbiology laboratories, its performance is not optimal ( Kim et al, 2014 ; Karabıçak et al, 2015 ; Posteraro et al, 2015 ). Candida auris , an emerging multidrug resistant pathogen causing healthcare-associated infections ( Schelenz et al, 2016 ), was misidentified as C. haemulonii by the VITEK 2 system ( Kathuria et al, 2015 ).…”

“…C. guilliermondii is an uncommon species of Candida that is rarely the cause of peritonitis . Because this species is difficult to differentiate from the other Candida species by phenotypic features with the traditional identification system, misidentification of the C. guilliermondii species often occurs . Furthermore, it has lower susceptibility to antifungal agents .…”
