Si on lit en parallèle les deux magnifiques traductions que Geoffrey Hill a données des drames en vers de Henrik Ibsen, Brand et Peer Gynt , on voit qu’elles mettent en scène deux dangers opposés pour l’âme humaine. Dans Brand , le personnage principal (un ecclésiastique) est consumé par une trop grande rectitude morale qui détruit l’amour au nom d’un « amour » déformé par le sacrifice de soi. Dans le cas de Peer Gynt , le personnage principal (un poète déchu qui prétend détester la poésie) se laisse aller à des excès par égoïsme, luxure et désir immodéré. En termes psychanalytiques, ces deux dangers peuvent être compris comme une forme d’égotisme, où le moi se suridentifie soit avec la fonction régulatrice du surmoi, soit avec la libido du ça. Dans les versions de Hill, les implications proto-freudiennes des drames d’Ibsen évoquent des aspects de la psychologie propre de Hill. Elles dessinent certains des enjeux liés à la créativité linguistique et religieuse présents dans la poésie de Hill.
