Misconceptions about the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery

Abstract: The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB) was introduced in the late 1970s as a fixed battery derived from clinical procedures and based upon the neuropsychological theory developed by the late Russian neuropsychologist Alexandr Luria. Considerable debate arose about the LNNB and it became the focus of harsh criticisms. The major criticisms related to the belief that the qualitative and quantitative approaches could not be fused, that the scales were too heterogeneous to produce meaningful scores, t… Show more

“…The LNNB was developed based on Luria's Approach to Neuropsychological Assessment and Rehabilitation [ 26 ]. Although it has been met with some criticism [ 27 ], extensive empirical literature has proven the clinical utility of LNNB [ 28 ]. LNNB-S fundamentally constitutes a neuropsychological assessment, initially prevalent in the diagnosis of localized brain injuries, and was misconceived as being solely applicable for evaluating brain injuries.…”

“…Recognizing this problem, his student, Anne-Lise Christensen, published a more structured version of the Lurian approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative aspects of his battery (Draper, 1976). Ultimately, Charles Golden further standardized and combined the works of both Luria and Christensen in his development of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB; Golden, Purisch, & Hammeke, 1979), scaling down almost 2000 original measurement items to 269 items covering 14 scales (e.g., motor, rhythm, memory, intelligence; Purisch, 2001).…”

“…Este instrumento es empleado en la actualidad con muy diversas poblaciones (Purisch, 2001). Así, La Batería Luria de Diagnóstico Neuropsicológico de Adultos (Luria-DNA), ha sido validada con población española adulta (Bausela, 2005(Bausela, , 2007a(Bausela, , 2008(Bausela, , 2010; Manga y Ramos, 2000) y ha demostrado buena validez concurrente con las escalas Wechsler para adultos (Bausela, 2010;Seisdedos et al, 1999).…”
