Misalignment loss of Free Space Optic link

Abstract: This article deals with few described loss which can appear in Free Space Optic (FSO) link. It is a misalignment loss which comes on by inaccurate installation of FSO heads. A calculation of this loss is based on power budget. The calculation of misalignment loss was done for professional FSO link which is installed in campus of VSB-Technical University of Ostrava. Results showed that a small misalignment from a straight line causes relatively great misalignment loss.

“…Free space optical (FSO) communications can establish point-to-point communication links through the atmosphere. Due to unregulated bandwidth, it can offer high security and speed, and relatively low cost and power consumption 1 , 2 . Compared to optical fiber and cable communication, FSO can be easily installed, cost-effective, and can support more users 3 , 4 .…”

“…In [3], the atmospheric turbulence and its effect on laser beam have been studied by the OptiSystem software. In [4], the misalignment loss of FSO communication link has been investigated. In [5], the bit error rate (BER) performance of an OOK modulation system, which is based on Gamma-Gamma model under the combined effects of atmospheric turbulence and pointing error, has been discussed.…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8][9] FSO terminal is rigidly attached to some stiff and sturdy structure enough to avoid vibration due to weather or traffic, even though the installation requires labor and time. [10][11][12][13][14] Another drawback of conventional FSO is vulnerability to disturbance to aerial laser transmission. Transmission is interrupted in the moment when any obstacle happens to interfere a line-of-sight of the laser beam.…”
