ABSTRACT. This review is based on a conference presented in June 2023. Its main objective is to explain the cognitive differences between humans and non-human primates (NHPs) focusing on characteristics of their brains. It is based on the opinion of a clinical neurologist and does not intend to go beyond an overview of this complex topic. As language is the main characteristic differentiating humans from NHPs, this review is targeted at their brain networks related to language. NHPs have rudimentary forms of language, including primitive lexical/semantic signs. Humans have a much broader lexical/semantic repertory, but syntax is the most important characteristic, which is probably unique to Homo sapiens. Angular gyrus, Broca's area, temporopolar areas, and arcuate fascicle, are much more developed in humans. These differences may explain why NHPs did not develop a similar language to ours. Language had a profound influence on all other higher nervous activities.

Aesthetic experiences, emerging saliently in the arts, play a pivotal role in transformative learning and creative processes that elicit physiological, affective, and cognitive responses associated with mental health indices. Interactions between subjects and aesthetic objects (e.g., visual artwork, music, and moving bodies) often entail elements of surprise and uncertainty that drive the inference of the hidden causes in the subject’s internal and external environment. These generate dynamics that align with the action-oriented Predictive Processing framework of brain function. Creative Arts Therapies (CATs) harness these dynamics by cultivating relational engagement using the arts modalities, prompting affective and cognitive processing. In this manuscript, we offer a review and conceptual analysis of recent empirical findings and theoretical premises that underpin aesthetic experiences and their relation to the psychotherapeutic use of the arts with a broad spectrum of populations and mental health conditions. We present a neuroscience-based approach to aesthetic intra- and inter-personal experiences, integrating therapeutic change factors of externalization-concretization, embodiment, and symbolization with functional network configurations, and interpersonal brain-to-brain coupling, to support predictive processing, learning, and creativity. Present and future interdisciplinary collaborations are underlined to elucidate the neurodynamic mechanisms driving psychological transformations, bridging neuroaesthetics and CATs.

Humans are essentially created as social creatures and need each other to interact with each other. Human life coexists with other humans, so social interaction cannot be avoided. As humans, we must be sensitive and respectful of each other. One of the social interaction capitals is the ability to empathize. Empathy can be defined as when an individual can feel what others feel, and this can be explained from a neuroscience perspective. The mirror neuron is one of the small parts of the brain that has the primary function as a mirror within the individual, in other words it is the center of the process where empathy occurs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the function of mirror neurons that are closely related to human empathy processes and the damage or dysfunction that occurs in it. Through literature studies, it is known that the mirror neurons are located in some parts of brain structures; in the premotor area and the lower parietal cortex. Mirror neurons generally project events around the individuals so the emotions and such behaviors are felt by the individuals. The lack of empathy experienced by some individuals with psychopathy as well as difficulty in understanding situations or responding to social cues in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be due to the dysfunction in mirror neurons. However, mirror neurons dysfunction still requires further research to be able to understand the role of mirror neurons in various aspects of mental processes and human behavior.
