MiRNAs in Lung Cancer: Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Therapeutic Potential

Abstract: Lung cancer is the dominant emerging factor in cancer-related mortality around the globe. Therapeutic interventions for lung cancer are not up to par, mainly due to reoccurrence/relapse, chemoresistance, and late diagnosis. People are currently interested in miRNAs, which are small double-stranded (20–24 ribonucleotides) structures that regulate molecular targets (tumor suppressors, oncogenes) involved in tumorigeneses such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, and angiogenesis via post-transcriptional… Show more

“…miR-362-3p has also been significantly altered in the serum for lung cancer patients. Its levels are correlated with the tumour stage and might be associated with lung cancer development and metastasis ( Wani et al, 2022 ). These studies suggest that miR-362-3p has the potential to be utilised as a circulating biomarker for various cancers.…”

“…MiRNAs have been shown to exert complex effects on lung cancer development and progression, including regulation of cancer growth, angiogenesis and metastasis, domination of host immune responses and remodeling of the tumor microenvironment 53 56 . In recent years, miRNAs have been revealed as a valuable diagnostic biomarker of lung cancer and also a key factors for predicting the prognosis of disease 12 , 57 . In our study, we examined the potential for changes in miR-150 expression level in relation to the diagnostic practice.…”

“…miRNAs are involved in post-transcriptional gene regulation through translation repression or mRNA degradation, depending on miRNA-mRNA complementarity, while lncRNAs regulates gene expression through interaction domains for DNA, mRNA, miRNA and proteins, according to their sequence and secondary structure 11 . The tissue-specific expression pattern of miRNAs and lncRNAs is highly dysregulated during cancer development, therefore they are hopeful diagnostic, and therapeutic targets 12 14 . However, the exact function and mechanism of its action of most of them is still unexplained.…”

“…The complete or partial pairing between miRNA and target mRNA, respectively, leads to the degradation or inhibition of protein translation genes. With this mechanism of action, miRNAs are involved in cell development, viral infection, immune response, angiogenesis, and the progression of many pathologies including breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer [12][13][14][15].…”
