miRNA-Based Potential Biomarkers and New Molecular Insights in Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic non-specific inflammatory bowel disease, which usually manifests as abdominal pain, diarrhea and hematochezia. The disease often recurs and is difficult to cure. At present, the pathogenesis is not clear, but it is believed that the disease is caused by a complex interaction among immunity, heredity, environment and intestinal microflora disorders. MicroRNA (miRNA) is endogenous single-stranded non-coding RNA of 17–25 nucleotides (nts). They target the 3'Untranslated Region… Show more

“…For microRNAs (miRNAs), a major role is to regulate the expression of most human genes; they perform a crucial function in the development of autoimmune diseases, including CD ( Zhou et al, 2021a ). The results of our study suggest that several miRNAs, including hsa-mir-21-5p, hsa-mir-93-5p, hsa-mir-98-5p, hsa-mir-1-3p, and hsa-mir-335-5p, may play critical roles in CD.…”

“…A major role of microRNAs (miRNAs) is to regulate the expression of most human genes; they play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as UC ( Zhou et al, 2021 ). MiR-93 may be involved in the pathogenic process of IBD through its involvement in the regulation of autophagic activity ( Chen et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Exosomes secreted by adipose-derived MSCs (adMSC-exo) affect the pathological changes of IBD. In DSS-induced colitis, intraperitoneal injection of adMSC-exo reduces colonic bleeding, colonic shortening, colonic injury, and weight loss [99]. Intraperitoneal injection of adMSC-exo decreases TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-12, and IL-17 levels, and upregulates IL-4, TGF-β, and IL-10 levels in the lymph nodes and spleen.…”
