BackgroundThe prevalence of cancer, specifically breast cancer, has raised globally. The etiology of breast cancer has been attributed to age, genetic mutations, reproductive history, hormone therapy, lifestyle factors, and viral infections. The human papillomavirus (HPV) has been one of the most widespread sexually transmitted infection in the United States. The role of HPV in breast oncogenesis was hypothesized before, yet the association remained unclear.MethodsIn this study, we employed a nationwide population study using centralized patient data managed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan and the Taiwan Cancer Registry database. The breast cancer incidence rates of the 467,454 HPV patients were compared to twice as many non-HPV patients with matching sex and age. Cumulative breast cancer incidence rates were presented by a Kaplan-Meier curve, and the relative risk of breast cancer for HPV and non-HPV patients were calculated using Cox-regression model.ResultsOur results indicated a crude hazard ratio (HR) and an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 2.336 and 2.271, respectively, when comparing the risk of breast cancer in the HPV and non-HPV group. The risk of breast cancer was comparable or higher than those of head and neck cancer (aHR=1.595) and cervical cancer (aHR=2.225), which both were found to have causal relationships with HPV. The Kaplan-Meier curve further illustrated a higher cumulative risk across 84 months for HPV patients (p<.0001). Besides HPV, age (p<.0001), insurance providers (p<.001), and comorbidities such as abnormal liver function (aHR=1.191, p=.0069) and hyperlipidemia (aHR=1.218, p=.0002) were found to be correlated with higher risks of breast cancer.ConclusionA correlation between HPV and breast cancer can be inferred using national health databases. More molecular studies are required to understand the mechanism of the virus-induced oncogenesis of the breast.

Background: The prevalence of breast cancer has increased and has currently become one of the most common cancers. Although the majority of the world’s population is infected with Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) during their lives, the severity of symptoms varies and not everyone infected with EBV is diagnosed with cancer. EBV might increase the risk for breast cancer either by activating the HER2/HER3 signaling cascades or by creating a state of prolonged immune stimulation. Materials and Methods: A systematic search of several electronic databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, EBSCOhost, JSTOR, and Scopus, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was conducted. The primary outcome of this review was to assess the prevalence of people with breast cancer that had a prior EBV infection. Results: For this review, 24 case-control studies were accepted. Our analyses included 1.989 breast cancer cases versus 1.034 control cases. EBV was found to be present in 27.9% of breast cancer cases versus 8.02% found in the normal breast tissue of controls. All affected people were women with a mean age was 48.19 years. The most common type of breast cancer found in EBV-infected tissues was invasive breast cancer. Cases were reported sporadically in a wide geographical distribution, and the prevalence varied from 4.6% - 64.1%. Conclusions: A previous EBV infection might be associated with a higher risk for breast malignancy. The most common type is invasive cancer. It mainly affects women and geographical variances are observed. More studies are necessary to elucidate the role of EBV in the mechanisms of breast cancer. Also, it is crucial to improve the prevention and treatment strategies.

Background. Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among all malignant neoplasms. This disease is accompanied by the development of anemic syndrome (AS). This complication not only worsens the results of treatment and, as a result, reduces overall survival, but also reduces the quality of life of patients, reduces adherence to treatment.Aim. To study the expression of hepcidin 25 (HP25), prohepcidin (PROHP), ferritin (FR), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and metabolites of nitric oxide (NOx) in the peripheral blood of patients colorectal cancer, to assess their relationship with the clinical course of the disease and with AS.Materials and methods. The study was conducted in 41 patients with colorectal cancer and AS. The content of FR, PROHP, HP25, IL-6 was determined using enzyme immunoassay. The total content of NOx in blood serum was determined using the Griess reagent after the reduction of nitrate to nitrite with cadmium granules in the presence of zinc.Results. There are three types of AS. A characteristic feature of which was microcytosis (MCV – 74.3 ± 2.1 fl) and hypochromia (MHC – 22.9 ± 1.2 pg) of erythrocytes. Type 1 of AS – iron deficiency anemia (IDA), type 2 – anemia of chronic diseases (ACD) in combination with iron deficiency erythropoiesis and type 3 – ACD with functional iron deficiency (FID). True IDA was detected in 15 (36.6 %) patients, which was classically characterized by: low concentration of FR, PROGP, GP25, IL-6 and NOx. A less significant group (9 patients, 21.9 %) had a high concentration of FR and low PROHP, GP25, IL-6, NOx, which indicated iron deficiency against the background of ACD. It differed from the first group with IDA in a significant concentration of FR, which may indicate the transition of IDA to the chronic phase of AS. Third group (17 patients, 41.5 %) – with FID – turned out to be the most numerous and characterized by a high concentration of FR (386.7 ± 41.2 ng/ml), GP25 (43.2 ± 7.1 ng/ml), PROHP (283.3 ± 18.5 ng/ml), IL-6 (24.8 ± 5.5 pg/ml), NOx (39.7 ± 5.5 µmol/l), the values were significantly higher (p <0.001) than in patients with IDA and ACD with iron deficiency erythropoiesis.Conclusion. In patients with a widespread tumor process, AS with FID is most often detected. FID was accompanied by hyperproduction of FR, IL-6, GP25, PROGP and NOx. A close correlation was noted between the studied parameters with an increase in the T-stage of colorectal cancer. This may indicate the relationship of these proteins in the development of cytokine-induced anemia in cancer patients. The data obtained can be widely used to assess the state of metabolic disorders in anemia associated with malignant neoplasms for the differential diagnosis of AS variants and adequate treatment.
