miR-193 expression differentiates telocytes from other stromal cells

Abstract: Telocytes (TCs) are a particular type of interstitial (stromal) cells defined by very long, moniliform telopodes. Their tissue location, between blood vessels and other cells such as cardiomyocytes (CMC) and neurons, suggests a role in intercellular signalling. In order to define a microRNA (miR) signature in cardiac TCs, we have found that miR-193 is differentially expressed between TCs and other interstitial cells. Because miR-193 regulates c-kit, our data support the previous finding that TCs express c-kit … Show more

“…These cells are markedly different from TC, but some of the cells labeled as 'fibroblasts' in the figures reported in histology textbooks and other literature show the morphology of TC and not that of active fibroblasts. Recently, some markers have been tested to differentiate cardiac TC from fibroblasts (which are c-kit negative) (39). Noteworthy, microRNA expression (e.g., miR-193) clearly differentiated TC from fibroblasts and in culture also allowed to discriminate between TC and other stromal cells (39).…”

“…There is evidence that renal telocytes co-express CD34, vimentin, and CD117 [16]. Furthermore, previous studies also demonstrated an obvious difference between telocytes and other cell populations, especially fibroblasts, in their microRNA imprint, proteome genetic profiles, and secretome levels [19-21]. These results indicate that telocytes are a unique cell population.…”

“…Even though telocyte presence within a given tissue could be confirmed using several techniques, such as immunofluorescence, immunostaining or proteomics and genetic methods transmission electron microscopy remains a valuable diagnostic tool in identifying this cell population 34,6163.…”
