Minoxidil Use in Dermatology, Side Effects and Recent Patents

Abstract: Minoxidil, a vasodilator medication known for its ability to slow or stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth, was first introduced, exclusively as an oral drug, to treat high blood pressure. It was however discovered to have the important side-effect of increasing growth or darkening of fine body hairs; this led to the development of a topical formulation as a 2% concentration solution for the treatment of female androgenic alopecia or 5% for treating male androgenic alopecia. Measurable changes disappear wit… Show more

“…However, AEs associated with topical minoxidil at the lower FDA-approved concentration of 2% have been previously reported, including irritant and allergic contact dermatitis as well as allergic reactions to the nonactive ingredient propylene glycol - a compound found in some topical solutions, particularly if they are galenic in nature [19]. In our study, the 0.2% caffeine solution resulted in a significant improvement from baseline in scalp itchiness at 6 months whereas no such improvement was observed for minoxidil 5% solution.…”

“…This compound effectively promotes hair growth by dilating blood vessels and opening potassium channels in both males and females with androgenic alopecia [6,14]. It is generally well maintained, but side effects including severe allergic reaction, hypertrichosis, and temporary hair loss have been reported [2,15].…”

“…Owing to the effects of minoxidil treatment, the miniaturized hair follicle stays longer in the anagen phase, decreasing shedding and producing hair similar to the terminal hair. 21 Pharmaceutically, commercial minoxidil solutions use ethyl alcohol, propylene glycol and water as solvents to solubilize minoxidil for its topical delivery. Currently, minoxidil is approved by FDA in form of a solution and a foam, both in strengths of 2% and 5% w/v.…”
