Minority stress is longitudinally associated with alcohol-related problems among sexual minority women

Abstract: Compared to sexual minority men and heterosexual women, sexual minority women report elevated alcohol use in young adulthood. Heavy alcohol use and alcohol use disorders disproportionately affect sexual minority women across the lifespan, yet there is limited research investigating reasons for such associations. The present study investigates longitudinal relationships between minority stress and both alcohol use as well as self-rated drinking consequences. Participants (N = 1,057) were self-identified lesbian… Show more

“…Enacted stigma (e.g., assault, homophobia, discrimination) and anti-SMY policies were directly associated with overall substance use [2430] and adverse substance use-related outcomes such as family conflict, car accidents, and legal consequences [11, 31]. School-based victimization was associated with heavier and more frequent substance use-related consequences [32], an association that was partially explained by differences in peers’ substance use norms.…”

“…Enacted stigma [2426, 3638] and perceived homophobia [39] generally predicted elevated rates of alcohol use [2426] and adverse alcohol-related outcomes [11]. Intimate partner violence (IPV) was also associated with greater odds for alcohol use among adolescent SMM [40].…”

“…In this model, external and internal factors related to one’s sexual minority identity increase daily levels of stress and may lead to maladaptive coping behaviors including the use of alcohol and other drugs. Recent support for the link between sexual minority stress and coping-motivated substance use (e.g., Meyer, 2013; Feinstein & Newcomb, 2016; Wilson, Gilmore, Rhew, Hodge, & Kaysen, 2016; Livingston, Christianson, & Cochran, 2016) have encouraged the development of substance use interventions which aim to increase LGB individuals’ abilities to engage in healthier, adaptive coping behaviors. The current study seeks to further inform the development of these interventions by examining a potentially powerful factor that may also be related to coping motivated substance use among LGB people: perceptions of the coping behaviors engaged in by LGB peers.…”
