This study evaluates the perspectives of urban mining in the framework of the circular economy (CE) and starts with a brief analysis of the size of global and urban metabolism and the role that plays materials and waste streams such as construction and demolition waste (C&DW) and waste from electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). These can be considered as temporary stocks or deposits to be mined in the future, thus shedding light on the concept of recycling potential, end-of-life functional recycling, and material concentration. The recycling potential could be very variable as in the case of metals. The average concentration of some metals (e.g., gold) in WEEE shows that it is higher per ton of electronic product compared to the amount in mining ores. This explains the importance of the concept of urban mining in the circular economy (CE) transition, given that the CE concept was born to address the challenges of high resources consumption rates and worsening environmental problems. The urban mining phenomenon becomes timely and extremely important for cities as they are relevant hubs of materials and energy consumption and source of environmental and social impacts in external areas due to mining and extraction activities. This study points to the need for creating and establishing strong synergies between the concept of CE and urban mining and the role of cities as innovators in finding circular solutions by incorporating more socially just urban mining activities to improve urban resource management, land use, and local and global wellbeing.

In recent decades, urbanization has led to an increase in building material stock. The high‐resolution quantification of building stock is essential to understand the spatial concentration of materials, urban mining potential, and sustainable urban development. Current approaches rely excessively on statistics or survey data, both of which are unavailable for most cities, particularly in underdeveloped areas. This study proposes an end‐to‐end deep‐learning model based on multi‐source remote sensing data, enabling the reliable estimation of building stock. Ground‐detail features extracted from optical remote sensing (ORS) and spatiotemporal features extracted from nighttime light (NTL) data are fused and incorporated into the model to improve accuracy. We also compare the performance of our feature‐fusion model with that of an ORS‐only regression model and traditional NTL regression for Beijing. The proposed model yields the best building‐stock estimation, with a Spearman's rank correlation coefficient of 0.69, weighted root mean square error of 0.58, and total error in the test set below 14%. Using gradient‐weighted class activation mapping, we further investigate the relationship between ORS features and building‐stock estimation. Our model exhibits reliable predictive capability and illustrates the tremendous value of the physical environment for estimating building stock. This research illustrates the significant potential of ORS and deep learning for stock estimation. Large‐scale, long‐term building‐stock investigations could also benefit from the end‐to‐end predictability and the data availability of the model.

<p>Overconsumption contributes to irreversible environmental damage through greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and water stress. These issues arise from resource extraction, processing, and disposal. Therefore, there is an urgency to develop techniques and strategies to keep materials in the loop for longer. Reusing reclaimed building materials could be a pivotal method to reduce overall material waste and decrease the need for new extraction, looking at demolition waste as a potential reservoir for future materials. The specific focus of this thesis is the investigation of the opportunities for extending the lifespan of demolition timber. Post-demolition timber is found in a range of different conditions. The conditions reflect the original characteristics, from perishable softwoods to more precious native timbers and the impact of use, weathering, and infestations by insects or fungi. A review of construction and demolition waste identified five currently overlooked timber waste categories; borer timber, scrap native timber (smaller than 0.6 meters), broken timber, weathered timber and contaminated timber (nails, paints and plastics). A significant consideration is whether timber infested with wood-boring insects (borer) should be recovered. This research reviewed methods of reuse and, through making, developed a method for reuse specific to interior architecture. The overarching aim of this thesis is to stimulate designers to explore waste material proactively, as waste material could play a vital role in the sustainable development of the construction industry. Due to the large amounts of waste from the industry, the sub-focus was to develop strategies to celebrate the imperfections of demolition waste aesthetically.</p>
