Mining for novel antibiotics in the age of antimicrobial resistance

Abstract: The misuse of antimicrobials is causing an alarming increase in the appearance of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. In this context, the identification of novel antibiotics against new targets and with low rates of resistance development is a major global challenge. In this article, we highlight a number of recent articles that exploit a variety of in vitro, in vivo and in silico state-of-the-art approaches to identify and develop new antimicrobials. Rapid progress in this research field will be crucial to … Show more

“…Bacterial and viral infections are two of the top causes of deaths worldwide. An increasing number of reports describing the development of bacterial and viral resistance, including in the form of polymicrobial infections, against currently available antibiotics and antivirals has urged the use of alternative products with potential activities against those two types of pathogens [141][142][143][144]. One of the commodities equipped with such activities are bee products [3,[145][146][147][148][149].…”

“…E. coli and Salmonella are among those zoonotic bacteria that can be transmitted to humans by foodborne route [ 20 ] and therefore are able to confer resistance genes to bacteria in humans. Infections caused by resistant bacteria can lead to treatment failure [ 20 ] and are expected to become the major cause of death in humans by 2050 [ 22 ], which highlights public health importance of decreasing antibiotic usage in farm animals.…”

“…Previously, we noted that the combined 1 H and 13 C NMR chemical shift fingerprint obtained from 1 H-{ 13 C} HSQC spectra is sufficiently sensitive to differentiate diastereomers of a particular CLiP even when they differ in only a single D/L configuration (43). More so, it is even sensitive to the stereochemistry of the 3hydroxy moiety of the fatty acid tail as well (44).…”
