Minimum age of the Mapleton, Tully, and Labrador Hollow moraines indicates correlation with the Port Huron Phase in central New York State

Abstract: The glaciated terrain along the northern edge of the Appalachian Plateau in the eastern Finger Lakes of central New York has long been recognized as an important location for meltwater routing and for proglacial lake development in the Great Lakes region. Despite recognition of multiple ice margins formed by the Ontario Lobe of the Laurentide ice sheet during the late Wisconsinan, numerical age control of several margins has been elusive, particularly in regard to regional readvances of the Port Bruce (ca. 16,… Show more

“…7D, E). Bedforms with consistent orientations to those described here are also observed on the surface of the HT (and regional equivalents) and are associated with a series of subtle till-cored moraine ridges to the west (Karrow 2005;Eyles et al 2011;Burt & Mulligan 2017) and south of Lake Ontario (Kozlowski et al 2018).…”

“…The morphological characteristics and patterns of bedforms within the PDF point to a time-transgressive development of bedforms within the field, consistent with many areas along the periphery of the LIS (Colgan & Mickelson 1997;Sookhan et al 2016;Kozlowski et al 2018). An early, regional drumlinization phase occurred under thick ice flowing towards the SW (Figs 8-10).…”

“…In contrast, there is limited control for the Late Wisconsin glacial chronology of east-central New York (Ridge, 2003(Ridge, , 2004(Ridge, , 2018Ridge et al, 2012) as well as for Middle Wisconsin events in the central Finger Lakes and the Genesee Valley (Young and Burr, 2006;Karig and Miller, 2013). Kozlowski et al (2018) make a case for locating the Port Huron Phase maximum at 14,300-16,000 cal yr B.P. north of the eastern Finger Lakes.…”
