Minimizing HVAC Energy Consumption Using a Wireless Sensor Network

Abstract: This paper presents a conceptual design of a multizone hvac controller based on a wireless sensor network that aims to optimize energy consumption while maintaining the comfort level of users. The proposed system is capable of learning the occupancy pattern of the residents in the building. Moreover, it is transparent (requires no manual configuration). Wireless sensor network technology is used to collect the required measurements for the control system. simulation results are used to demonstrate the system p… Show more

“…As a result of increasing the population and global warming and many other serious reasons, demanding for energy saving is feasible (Tachwali et al, 2007). Due to the much consumption of energy by HVAC systems, is almost around 50% of total of generated electrical energy in the world, designing the appropriat e controller for declining the consumption of energy is considerable (Tachwali et al, 2007).…”

“…The result of the estimation can be used to support demand-driven HVAC operations. In [38], the authors develop an application framework to control the HVAC energy consumption based on the measured occupancy of the room. It is featured with three subsystems: the monitor system, which contains a set of sensor node to measure the internal and external conditions of the building; these conditions include the occupancy, the temperature, the humidity of the building and the light condition of the exterior of the building; the actuation system, which determines how the conditional air will be supplied in the building; and the main controller, which is responsible for getting input from the sensors and arrange the supplement of conditional air, this is done using a control algorithm that takes current occupancy of a zone, occupancy of the neighbor zone and occupancy pattern as input and produce the desired air flow as the output.…”
