Minimization of sludge production in an integrated UASB–continuous flow sequencing batch reactor system

Abstract: a b s t r ac tA pilot plant consisting of a combined up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and a continuous flow sequencing batch reactor (cSBR) was tested for treating domestic wastewater. After the start-up, the system was operated for 115 d at a retention time of 5.7 h in the UASB reactor and a cycle time of 8 h in the cSBR. The efficiency of the removal of the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the total suspended solids (TSS) in the UASB reactor were 48% and 46%, respectively. The overall average … Show more

“…In addition, the disposal of wastewater in these areas without treatment of water streams is one of the significant environmental problems, where it causes eutrophication and affects public health [2]. Exploring cheap and simple treatment systems in these rural areas has been one of the challenges in the last decades [3]. Many pollutants, such as heavy metals, are causing problems in conventional wastewater treatment systems as the heavy metals have an inhibitory effect on the microorganism [4].…”

“…Although biological wastewater is considered the most widely used system to treat wastewater, it is not suitable for many industrial wastes that contain inhibitory substances for the growth of bacteria [1]. Therefore, adsorption is considered an vital process in industrial wastewater treatment and can be regarded as the most cost-effective and easy process for removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater [2,3].…”

“…In a CFID reactor, during each cycle, filling remains continue, followed by the sequence of aeration, settling phase, and long decanting 4,20,21 . CFID reactor needs less control and has a simple configuration, better denitrification rate, low sludge production, and a lower energy consumption rate as compared to conventional SBR 20,22 . The CFID treatment process involves the continuous supply of substrate (raw sewage as a carbon source) to the reactor during the non‐aeration period, which promotes the denitrification rate 23 …”
