This paper proposes a nonlinear model predictive direct power control (PDPC) strategy for a double fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy generation system. Active and reactive power variations of DFIG are calculated based on machine rules, and a nonlinear model of DFIG is given. A nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) is presented based on the useful cost function and constraint that it results in more proximity between simulations and reality. The power and current ripples are reduced and the optimal rotor voltage is generated based on an objective function and the constraints. The rotor voltage vector is calculated in the synchronous reference frame and transferred into the rotor reference frame. Simulation results of a 2 MW DFIG system show good performance of the proposed method during variation of active and reactive powers, machine parameters, and wind speed. Also, the transient responses of active and reactive powers are within a few milliseconds.

Purpose – A direct power control (DPC) of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is presented. A new method, which is based on the rotation of the space sector, clockwise or vice versa, is proposed to improve the performance of the switching table. Then, it is combined with a fuzzy system to have advantages of both rotation sector and fuzzy controller. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, a new DPC of the DFIG is presented. To improve the performance of the switching table, a new method is proposed. The method is based on the rotation of the space sector, clockwise or vice versa. The excellence of the proposed method is proven. Then, it is shown that the performance of the system can be enhanced by using a fuzzy logic controller. The rotation method is combined with a fuzzy system. Findings – Simulation shows that although sector rotation and fuzzy controller can improve the performance of the DFIG, a combination of both demonstrates a smoother response in order that reactive and active power ripples and THD of the injected current decrease in different speeds. Also, it is demonstrated that the proposed method is robust against parameters variations. However, a hardware experiment should be performed to be practically verified. Originality/value – A sector rotation is proposed and its effect on the performance of the DFIG is considered. A simple method to write rules table is presented and the performance of sector rotation and fuzzy controller on the DFIG is analysed.

To exactly control the active and reactive power of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), a robust controller along with an effective strategy should be applied. Since the generated power by DFIG depends on the wind speed, both active and reactive power has been essentially followed out according to the entrance wind in the steady state and turbulent conditions. Hence, the Non‐Integer Order Proportional Integral Derivative (NIOPID) controller based Direct Power Control (DPC) strategy is here introduced to simultaneously minimize the deviation of both the active and reactive power so that precise tracking of these powers to be attained. Toward this subject, both the dynamic and transient stability of DFIG have been scheduled as main targets of this paper. Due to multi‐objective nature of the design problem, a multi‐objective technique is assigned to figure out the optimal result. Considering the high performance of Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) for unraveling the nonlinear objectives, it has been employed to reveal the optimal parameters NIOPID controller. To well verify and validate the performance of NIOPID controller, it has been evaluated under the affected power system caused by short circuit and flicker incidents. The simultaneous coordination scheme based on MOPSO has been withal scheduled with respect to three aforementioned operating conditions.
