Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis for Tibial Plateau Fractures

Abstract: purpose. To evaluate radiological and clinical outcome of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) for tibial plateau fractures. Methods. 35 men and 6 women aged 19 to 75 (mean, 40; standard deviation [SD], 14) years underwent MIPO for displaced tibial plateau fractures. According to the Schatzker system, the tibial plateau fractures were classified as types I (n=3), II (n=9), III (n=11), IV (n=6), V (n=7), and VI (n=5). Six patients had open fractures; 2 of them underwent debridement before MIPO. 10 pat… Show more

“…The mean duration of surgery in our series was 100 min which was comparable to 113 min by Hasnain et al [20] in 2012. In our series 82% of the patients were mobilized within 10 days of surgery and remaining 18% were kept protected until 3 weeks and gradual mobilization was started.…”

“…Mitchell and Shepard point out precise intra-articular reduction and stable fixation of the fragments [10], while incorrect reduction and instability can cause rapid degeneration of the articular cartilage. Similarly, other studies reported requirement for anatomic reduction and stable fixation to achieve early mobilization and determinant of functional outcomes as postoperative ROM, joint stability and pain [11]- [13]. In addition sufficient cartilage nourishment is provided with stable fixation and early ROM [11].…”

“…"Favourable outcome is due to less extensive dissection of soft tissue envelope and de vitalization of fracture fragments." [6] Posttraumatic osteoarthritis was seen in 9.2% (n = 4) of the 42 patients managed surgically. In this study the incidence of secondary arthritis was more common in type IV and VI injuries.…”
