Minimally invasive approaches for gastric cancer—Korean experience

Abstract: Laparoscopic surgery in Korea increased rapidly because of the early detection of gastric cancer by the development of diagnostic tools and nationwide screening. The Korean Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Study Group (KLASS group) played a leading role in various projects related with minimally invasive surgery. The justification of minimally invasive procedures including robotic surgery, sentinel-node biopsy, or single-port surgery/Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) must be predeter… Show more

“…As the surgical quality may become one of the most important issues in this clinical trial, surgeons are required to be standardized and qualified by participating in a surgical quality control trial, entitled ‘KLASS-02-QC: Standardization of D2 Lymphadenectomy and Surgical Quality Control for KLASS-02 Trial' (NCT01283893). Each applicant should submit three unedited videos each for LADG and ODG, respectively, which are to be evaluated by independent reviewers [2]. As a result, only certified surgeons can join KLASS-02-RCT.…”

“…Laparoscopic gastrectomy has been known to have several advantages, including less postoperative pain, better cosmesis, less inflammatory reaction, rapid recovery of bowel function, and fast recovery compared to conventional open surgery (1). For early gastric cancer, laparoscopic gastrectomy and lymph node dissection is considered safe and comparable procedure in terms of postoperative outcome even in large scale randomized clinical trial, and also expected to show promising long-term survival outcome (2)(3)(4).…”

“…Robot-assisted surgery is performed in many hospitals, especially for early stages of cancers. [1][2][3] However, reports on robot assisted combined operations are very limited. We report the first successful concurrent robotassisted distal gastrectomy and partial nephrectomy in a patient with synchronous early gastric cancer and renal cell carcinoma.…”
