Minimal Hearing Loss: From a Failure-Based Approach to Evidence-Based Practice

Abstract: Evidence indicates significant risks associated with untreated MHL. Evidence also demonstrates the need for early intervention and identifies several appropriate intervention strategies; however, no single protocol is appropriate for all children. Therefore, families should be educated about the impact of MHL and about available interventions so that informed decisions can be made.

“…In addition to the systematic reviews or meta-analyses introduced in Table 1, other summaries on the effects of children's UHI or current state of management of UHI have also been recently published [46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53]. However, they represent more opinion papers or unstructured summaries because of severe shortcomings, including a very limited publishing time range of the original articles or a lack of description of any systematic methodology or review protocol used to search and review the articles.…”

“…Despite that, some (e.g. [52]) summary articles even include clinical recommendations for decision making. Therefore, to be able to advise clinicians on a sound basis, there is a need for wide-scale, carefully conducted systematic reviews on pediatric UHI with careful quality assessment of the articles included in the review.…”

“…Yet the bilateral mild level hearing loss (26dB to 40dB in the better ear) and mild level unilateral hearing loss (less than 25dB in the better ear, above than 25dB in the other ear) may take an extended risk of maladaptive improvement. All things considered, numerous results in the children having low level of hearing stay unexplored, especially those related through the emotionally and socially betterment (Winiger et al, 2016). To be sure, despite the fact that children with hearing disability are incorporated into certain studies, their social aptitudes have not been studied explicitly.…”

“…Statements that the diagnosis and treatment of mild hearing loss in children are potentially unnecessary or harmful are refuted by numerous studies over the past four decades that demonstrate delays in communication, academic, psychosocial, and quality of life outcomes for children with mild hearing loss (see Winiger, Alexander, & Diefendorf, 2016 for a recent review). The data presented by Carew and colleagues also demonstrate that peers with mild hearing loss lag behind peers with normal hearing in receptive language abilities.…”
