Miniemulsification of Monomer-Resin Hybrid Systems

Abstract: Miniemulsion polymerization is particularly well suited to synthesize hybrid nanocomposites. The first stage in this process is to prepare hybrid monomer-resin nanodroplets by miniemulsification. In this work, the efficiencies of several homogenization equipment (rotor-stator, sonicator, and high-pressure homogenizer) were compared. For the most efficient one, the effect of homogenization conditions, type of resin, emulsifier concentration, and viscosity of the organic phase on the size of the composite drople… Show more

“…For these cases, miniemulsion polymerization is particularly well suited. The preformed step‐growth polymer(s) is (are) dissolved in the monomers to be polymerized by free‐radical polymerization and the mixture dispersed in water using a homogenization device . Then, the monomers contained in the composite droplets are polymerized by adding an initiator.…”

“…The incorporation of preformed polymer in miniemulsions can affect the droplet size, depending on its concentration and its molecular weight [Lopez et al, 2008;Blythe et al, 2000]. Colmán et al (2011) investigated the effect of adding 10-20% of polystyrene (PS) and Poly(methyl methacrylate) on the kinetics and nucleation mechanism of ME homopolymerizations of St and MMA, employing KPS as initiator.…”

“…HPH is a suitable technique to produce submicron droplets at a high throughput [17]. However, it has to be mentioned that HPH so far has been rarely used to prepare miniemulsions for polymerization [11,14].…”

“…Technical processes to disrupt droplets include static mixers [8,9], rotor-stator systems [9][10][11], ultrasound devices [9,12,13], and high pressure homogenizers [11,13,14]. Depending on the process, the resulting droplet size distribution is determined either by the type and concentration of the surfactant, which is needed to stabilize the monomer droplets, or by the energy input [13,15].…”
