Miniaturized, Planar Ion-selective Electrodes Fabricated by Means of Thick-film Technology

Abstract: Various planar technologies are employed for developing solid-state sensors having low cost, small size and high reproducibility; thin-and thick-film technologies are most suitable for such productions. Screen-printing is especially suitable due to its simplicity, low-cost, high reproducibility and efficiency in large-scale production. This technology enables the deposition of a thick layer and allows precise pattern control. Moreover, this is a highly economic technology, saving large amounts of the used inks… Show more

“…In case of polymer membrane electrodes the intermediate transduction layer may be formed by electropolymerised conducting polymers [13], like polypyrroles and polythiophenes, which are electroactive materials with mixed electronic and ionic conductivity. Solid-contact ISEs gained much attention due to possibility of sensor miniaturisation and cheap fabrication process [15]. More information on application of conducting polymers for chemical sensors array development may be found in a recent review [16].…”

“…Detailed information on ET systems may be found in recent review articles [24][25][26][27]. Application of modern technologies, like microelectronics or screen-printing technique, to sensor fabrication [28] permits to integrate several sensors in silicon [29] or on some other solid support [15]. In this case we speak of an integrated sensor array.…”

“…where E 0 is the selective electrode constant, a A n+ is the activity of A n+ ion Significant efforts have been made during the past decade to improve the robustness of conventional ISEs, widen the range of ions detected and miniaturize the electrodes (Bakker et al, 2008;Tymecki et al, 2006). FEDs belong to the second class of potentiometric transducers and include ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) and light-addressable potentiometric sensors (LAPSs).…”

“…In attempts to improve the performance of a pH sensor, previous works have included fabrication of Ag/AgCl electrode using screen printing technique [10][11][12], deposition by electrochemical process of Ag and AgCl onto graphite [13], the use of various metal oxides as pH electrodes [14][15][16][17], and the application of nanotube based electrodes [18]. Although some materials have proved to be a good candidate for pH reference electrode, however, none of the methods has yet produced a satisfactory cost over preformance results.…”
