Miniaturized and Flexible FSS-Based EM Shields for Conformal Applications

Abstract: This paper reports on very efficient and highly miniaturized wideband Polygon shaped Frequency Selective Surface (PFSS) shields for planar and conformal applications in X band. These shields have been analyzed for both lossy as well as for low loss substrates. The conformal configurations of PFSS are particularly investigated for inward, outward and double curved profiles useful for a variety of applications. The conformal designs have been tested for two different radii of curvatures. The models have been sim… Show more

“…In the recent literature, many design configurations have been studied to incorporate fractal‐inspired antennas to provide compactness, dual‐band, and wide‐band for wearable applications 4–8 . Many frequency selective surface (FSS) structures have been reported 9–14 in the literature to alter the radiation characteristics of the antenna for the desired applications. A polygon‐shaped miniaturized FSS is presented as an electromagnetic shield for conformal applications 11 .…”

“…This spatial filtering property of FSS is also useful for enhancing the gain of the antenna [8,9] and steering the beam in a particular direction [10]. Notably, for electromagnetic shielding applications, FSS based band stop filter effectively reduces electromagnetic interference [11][12][13]. Traditionally metallic enclosures are used to provide electromagnetic shielding for electronic circuitry.…”
