Miniaturization of Compact Quadrifilar Helix Antennas for Telemetry, Tracking and Command Applications

Abstract: Abstract-This paper addresses the miniaturization of Quadrifilar Helix Antennas (QHAs) for space applications (VHF Telemetry, Tracking and Command). Several shape miniaturization techniques were presented, and the impact of height reduction is quantified in terms of radiation pattern, gain and phase center. Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that Compact Quadrifilar Helix Antennas (CQHAs) with a height reduced up to 70% reported to the reference QHA can be designed. By using an appropriate optimiza… Show more

“…There are also some studies on deployable antennas; in [ 25 ], a survey is performed on different types of antennas for CubeSats, and the equations and tools for the antenna design are provided. In addition, the design and testing on UHF [ 26 ] and VHF [ 27 , 28 ] antennas has been the object of research. In [ 29 ], there are also some large deployable antennas for CubeSats.…”

“…The main specifications of a BGAN antenna are as follows: for an open-ended QHA, while λ/2 or λ configuration is often used for short-circuited QHA [8,10]. In either case, QHA radiation pattern is typically optimised and the design degrees of freedom include the winding pitch angle of the helix (determined by the antenna height and number of turns), the length of the radiators, and the diameter of the core.…”

“…Alternatively, resonant axial mode printed quadrifilar helical antennas (PQHAs) [8,9] are particularly attractive for GPS/BGAN applications, as they offer small size, CP radiation, and wide-angle coverage in the elevation plane. Each PQHA is composed of four equi-spaced parallel line radiators with an optimised pitch angle that are wound in a clockwise or counter-clockwise manner depending on the polarisation sense/lobe direction required.…”

“…(Sahu, 2015) with help of Loop and Beam steering antenna is used for Beam variation using PIN diode. Return loss under 6dB, SWR less than 3, Gain between 5.9 to 6.6dBi, Bandwidth of 130MHz and Omni directional radiation pattern is obtained in (Takacs et al, 2015). In this paper polarization reconfiguration is obtained using square shaped antenna and PIN diode for switching purpose.…”
