Miniature triggered vacuum switches for precise initiation of insensitive loads in demanding environments

Abstract

The construction and physical operation of a miniature triggered vacuum switch (TVS) are described, including DC and pulsed pre-breakdown images associated with the surface-flashover initiation of the vacuum switch tube.Colour imaging of pre-breakdown phenomena within the surface-flashover trigger module of the switch envelope is presented, and its key features discussed in relation to the pre-breakdown phase of a high-voltage vacuum gap closing switch.Key operating parameters of a TVS device are then presented, and this performance reviewed in the context of fast-rising commutation of high-current pulses within the switch tube, quantifying the performance improvements obtained through the adoption of a doped trigger region.Finally the physical robustness of the TVS mechanical package is reviewed, along with its suitability for use in switching fast-rising current pulses into insensitive loads, and its application in aggressive environmental conditions.
