The safety of workers is significant when talking about large risky workplaces such as construction job sites. Therefore, we proposed a UHF-RFID tag antenna that can be used to identify various Job site equipments and also construction workers by tagging their wearable helmets. Here, the compact, low profile, and simple structured platform-tolerant RFID tag antenna is proposed and optimized for metal sheet and ABS-based safety helmets. Furthermore, WTMiddleware (Worker Tracking Middleware) using Javascript, CSS, and HTML has been implemented to demonstrate a real-time secured web-based remote access of workers to provide their actual on-site monitoring and tracking of construction equipment carried/operated by the workers for tracking solutions. First, the fabricated tag’s performance was tested successfully in an outdoor scenario on various mountable materials such as wood, glass, plastic, and metal. The tag yielded a reasonable read range of 5.9 m on metallic sheet and 7.1 m on plastic with the highest read distance of 9.3 m on a glass sheet. Also, the measurement setup along with developed WTMiddleware was deployed in an actual workplace to demonstrate practical utility of the designed tag affixed on workers’ safety helmets. It was observed that all the workers wearing tagged helmets were successfully identified, tracked, and monitored. Also, their real-time on-site details, working zone, and complete personal details were accessed through a developed web page application via WTMiddleware.

With recent advances in wearable wrist-worn wireless sensing applications, the demand for smartwatches and wristbands is rapidly increasing due to their widespread adoption in applications such as smart health monitoring, security, and fitness tracking. Currently, these devices primarily operate in the 2.45 GHz band, leveraging the availability of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies. However, the use of 433 MHz, 868 MHz, 915 MHz, 923 MHz) for wearable systems has also gained interest due to the emergence of wireless technologies like long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN), narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) and Sigfox, which offer the potential for long-range wireless communications and sensing applications. In recent times, there has been a notable surge in the commercial production of a variety of Sub-GHz wrist-worn wireless sensing devices for health monitoring and tracking applications. Nevertheless, communications at Sub-GHz frequencies present significant challenges in antenna design, primarily due to the practical size constraints of wrist-worn devices and the necessity for using electrically small antennas. This paper meticulously reviews wrist-worn Sub-GHz antennas reported in the literature, analyzing key antenna parameters such as antenna topology, size, impedance bandwidth, peak realized gain, radiation efficiency, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additionally, it underlines antenna design challenges, limitations, current trends, and presents potential future perspectives. To the best of the author's knowledge, there is currently no existing literature comprehensively reviewing Sub-GHz wristworn antennas. Therefore, this paper represents the inaugural effort to provide a comprehensive review in this specific domain.

Low-profile wideband miniaturized tag antenna mounted on the human body

In this study, a novel, cost-effective miniaturized tag antenna was developed for applications on the human body. To achieve impedance matching with the complex conjugate impedance of the Monza-4 tag chip (7.17–j74.22 Ω at 915 MHz), the proposed structure was configured by coarsely tuning the positions of vias and fine-tuning the small gaps of its coupled patches. For further reducing the profile and dimensions of the antenna, a design technique based on the three-dimensional dipole antenna current distribution was used. The proposed antenna configuration was not only miniaturized but also achieved a long stable reading distance (>5.0 m) and a wide impedance bandwidth of 71 MHz or 7.65% (covering the ultrahigh frequency radio frequency identification ranges in most regions), regardless of the location of the tag on the human body. Experiments were conducted to validate the simulated results, and adequate agreement was found between the simulated results and the measured results.
