Mini-Mental State Examination subscores indicate visuomotor deficits in Alzheimer's disease patients: A cross-sectional study in a Dutch population

Abstract: The presented data suggest that memory function and visuomotor function are equally impaired in the present study population. This could indicate that visuomotor dysfunction might be a more important clinical feature of AD than is currently assumed. This knowledge can be used to develop new tests and markers for AD reflecting deficits in visuomotor functions, such as quantification of eye and hand movements.

“…Although AD is typically associated with impairments in memory and other aspects of cognition, it has been suggested that visuomotor function is equally impaired in patients with AD (de Boer, Mattace‐Raso, van der Steen, & Pel, ). Crucially, a subtle deterioration in visuomotor control has been observed, not only in patients with fully developed AD, but also at earlier stages (Tippett et al ., ; Verheij et al ., ).…”

“…In the current study, we extend this line of investigation by examining subtests of the MMSE in drivers with CI and with NCI. Studies underscore the importance of MMSE subtests . The MMSE includes tasks of orientation, attention, language, visuomotor, and memory skills.…”

“…Studies underscore the importance of MMSE subtests. 11 The MMSE includes tasks of orientation, attention, language, visuomotor, and memory skills. Each task is associated with distinct neural underpinnings, and performance deteriorates in conjunction with select patterns of neural degeneration.…”

“…Alziemer's disease normally has an amnestic presentation, yet a non-amnestic presentation is also possible and in fact some claim that the memory function and the visuomotor function are equally impaired (5). The visual variant of the AD was described by Grunthal (6); in Snowden's et al series (7) the frequency was 5%.…”

“…Several authors examined visual deficits using neuropsychological tests and reaching discordant results. Indeed some recognized visuospatial deficits in the early stages (5,29) whereas others found evidence only in the latter stages of the disease (30,31). According to Paxton et al (30), these deficits may be useful in tracking the disease's course.…”
