Tal como o Termalismo a Talassoterapia é outra importante atividade económica do âmbito da Hidrologia Médica e que, por definição, consiste no "Uso da água do mar, de produtos do mar (areia, lama, sal, algas) e, ainda, o clima e aerossóis do litoral marítimo como forma de terapia". Porém, a definição atual de Talassoterapia é ainda mais precisa, porque considera: "O uso combinado com fins preventivos e terapêuticos da água do mar e de produtos derivados do mar, sob aconselhamento e supervisão médica, no interior de espaços adequados e equipados para o efeito, os Centros de Talassoterapia localizados cerca do mar". Publicações recentes sobre Talassoterapia referem os antecedentes históricos do uso da água do mar com propósitos terapêuticos, os conceitos, as propriedades físicas e químicas da água do mar e dos produtos dela derivados (areia, lama, algas, sal e aerossóis) 1, 2, 3 . O conceito holístico de Talassoterapia contempla também o exercício físico controlado e a reeducação alimentar.A Talassoterapia insere-se na área científica e técnica da Hidrologia Médica, competência do amplo campo da Medicina. Assim, apenas os médicos, de preferência aqueles com essa especialização, devem ser responsáveis pelos spas onde se pratica a Talassoterapia, e também devem estar envolvidos no acompanhamento do estado de saúde dos pacientes considerando potenciais contraindicações, e na prescrição e supervisão do método de aplicação do tratamento.Dá-se o nome de Talassoterapia, palavra que deriva da palavra grega Thalassos que significa mar e da palavra terapia que significa tratamento, à aplicação terapêutica ou cosmética da água do mar, ou à aplicação de produtos derivados da água do mar ou com esta relacionados, tais como: areia, algas, lamas, clima marítimo, etc.. França foi o país pioneiro da talassoterapia científica, tendo o primeiro balneário, onde a água do mar era utilizada em cuidados de saúde, sido estabelecido em Dieppe. O termo Talassoterapia é atribuído ao Dr. De la Bonnardière, em 1867, pelo uso medicinal da água do mar numa Estância ou Resort, em Arcachon, França. Mais tarde, em 1899, o Dr. Louis Bagot criou o primeiro Centro de Talassoterapia, em Roscoff, em França. Também, foi ao biólogo francês René Quinton, em 1904, que se deveu a identidade orgânica entre a água do mar e o plasma do sangue do homem. Gregos e Romanos veneravam Neptuno e Poseidon, respetivamente, como os deuses dos mares. Já Eurípides (480 -406 a.C.), poeta Grego, dizia: "O mar cura todas as doenças do homem". Ainda na Grécia antiga, Hipócrates (460 -370 a.C.) considerado o pai da Medicina, prescrevia tratamentos que utilizavam a água do mar, quer sob a forma CITAÇÃO
