T HE increasing resistance of pathogenic bacteria and fungi to remedies and their biofilm formation made it is obligatory to search for new, safer and more effective alternatives using medicinal plants. The present investigation aims to study the potency of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) aqueous extract mixture with antibiotics or rotaxane derivatives against 3 multi-drug resistant bacteria, 2 fluconazole resistant fungi strains, their biofilm, 3 aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus strains and aflatoxin biosynthesis. Some bioactive compounds and elements were obtained for clove extract by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). A 33.3 -60 mg/mL concentrations of S. aromaticum aqueous extract were sufficient as MBC against E. coli O157:H7, E. coli O121, and Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains, respectively. In practically all combinations of extract, antibiotics, and rotaxane derivatives, synergistic or indifferent relations were detected. No antagonistic interactions were observed against bacteria. For C. albicans and C. glabrata concentrations 24.64 and 49.28 mg/mL of clove were observed as MFC, respectively. Conversely, A. flavus strains were not repressed. Combination of clove with fluconazole exposed synergistic interactions against C. albicans. Clove considerably suppressed biofilm formation with inhibition percentage of 81.99, 82.2, and 72.89% for E. coli (O157:H7 and O121) and S. aureus (MRSA), respectively. Furthermore, C. albicans biofilm was reduced and the inhibition percentage was 54%. The highest inhibition percentage of aflatoxin production using clove was 31.7%. This investigation suggests the clove aqueous extract to be a prospective broad spectrum antimicrobial composite alone or in combination.

Dryopteris filix-mas (hereafter D. filix-mas), a wild leafy vegetable, has gained popularity among high mountain residents in the Hindukush-Himalaya region due to its exceptional nutritional profile, and their commercial cultivation also offers viable income alternatives. Nevertheless, besides phytochemicals with medicinal applications, ecological factors strongly affect their mineral contents and nutritional composition. Despite this, little has been known about how this wild fern, growing in heterogeneous ecological habitats with varying soil physiochemical properties and coexisting species, produces fronds with optimal mineral and nutritional properties. Given its nutritional and commercial significance, we investigated how geospatial, topographic, soil physiochemical characteristics and coexisting plants influence this widely consumed fern’s mineral and nutrient content. We collected soil, unripe fern fronds, and associated vegetation from 27 D. filix-mas populations in Swat, NW Pakistan, and were analyzed conjointly with cluster analysis and ordination. We found that the fronds from sandy-loam soils at middle elevation zones exhibited higher nitrogen contents (9.17%), followed by crude fibers (8.62%) and fats (8.09%). In contrast, juvenile fronds from the lower and high elevation zones had lower moisture (1.26%) and ash (1.59%) contents, along with fewer micronutrients such as calcium (0.14–0.16%), magnesium (0.18–0.21%), potassium (0.72–0.81%), and zinc (12% mg/kg). Our findings indicated the fern preference for middle elevation zones with high organic matter and acidic to neutral soil (pH ≥ 6.99) for retaining higher nutritional contents. Key environmental factors emerged from RDA analysis, including elevation (r = −0.42), aspect (r = 0.52), P-3 (r = 0.38), K+ (r = 0.41), EC (r = 0.42), available water (r = −0.42), and field capacity (r = −0.36), significantly impacting fern frond’s mineral accumulation and nutrient quality enhancement. Furthermore, coexisting plant species (r = 0.36) alongside D. filix-mas played a pivotal role in improving its mineral and nutritional quality. These findings shed light on the nutritional potential of D. filix-mas, which could help address malnutrition amidst future scarcity induced by changing climates. However, the prevalent environmental factors highlighted must be considered if the goal is to cultivate this fern on marginal lands for commercial exploitation with high mineral and nutrient yields in Hindukush-Himalaya.

Las cáscaras de los cítricos presentan una gran cantidad de aceites esenciales con muchas aplicaciones en las industrias farmacéutica, cosmética y alimentaria. En las últimas décadas en nuestro país la industria de cítricos ha alcanzado un gran despegue debido al aumento de la producción interna y el crecimiento de las exportaciones, esto sumado a que a nivel internacional han ido cambiando los hábitos alimentarios de los consumidores quienes buscan alimentos funcionales, por lo que los cítricos han ganado mucha atención. Uno de los cítricos que ha venido destacando en países como India y Nigeria es el Citrus jambhiri, que también se cultiva en nuestro país y presenta en sus cáscaras un aceite esencial muy interesante. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue realizar la extracción del aceite de la cáscara de Citrus jambhiri usando el método de destilación por arrastre de vapor de agua y cuantificar por cromatografía de gases acoplado a espectrometría de masas los principales componentes presentes en el aceite esencial, para luego comparar el porcentaje de rendimiento y los principales componentes presentes en las cáscaras de otras especies de cítricos. Asimismo, se estableció las principales propiedades organolépticas y fisicoquímicas del aceite, así como su actividad antioxidante. Se estableció que el porcentaje de rendimiento del aceite de Citrus jambhiri fue de 0,72%, mientras que en su composición destacan los monoterpenos hidrocarbonados en un 76.5%,siendo los más abundantes el limoneno (37,7%), el β-pineno (25,1%) y el E-β-ocimeno (5,6%), los monoterpenos oxigenados constituyen un 15%, siendo los mayoritarios el citronelal (4,9%) y el linalool (4,1%) y los sesquiterpenos hidrocarbonados como el β-cariofileno en un 2,8%. Dentro de sus propiedades fisicoquímicas se encontró una densidad (20°C) de 0,844 g/mL ± 0,02; índice de refracción (20°C) de 1,472 ± 0,01 y un pH de 4,7 ± 0,01. El IC50 determinado para el aceite esencial de Citrus jambhiri fue de 99,8 ± 5,6 mg/mL.
