Mineralogy, Geochemistry, and Origin of Buyukmahal Manganese Mineralization in the Artova Ophiolitic Complex, Yozgat, Turkey

Abstract: The Artova ophiolite complex (AOC) is exposed along the northwestern and eastern margins of Yozgat area in Turkey. The Mn-deposit in the Buyukmahal area is part of this ophiolite complex. The deposit is in banded and lenticular forms and hosted by a radiolarite unit overlying the volcanics. Pyrolusite and magnetite are the main minerals of the manganese ore in the Buyukmahal (Yozgat) area. The gang minerals in the deposit are composed only of quartz and calcite. In this study, mineralogy, major oxide, trace el… Show more

“…Manganese metal and its alloys play a significant role in various industrial sectors including, metallurgical, non-metallurgical and steel industries; however, there is considerable controversy about its origin (e.g., Magaritz and Brenner 1979;Shah and Moon 2007;Oksuz 2011;Öksüz and Okuyucu 2014). Manganese addition enhances the forging qualities of steel, the steel strength, durability, stiffness, hardness; it also improves the wearing resistance and hardenability of the steel structures.…”

“…It is known that both deposits in the study area were rapidly deposited from hydrothermal solutions and are consistent with hydrothermal exhalative manganese deposits in modern spreading centers and formed in distal parts of spreading centers (Öksüz, 2011b). Moreover, data from this study indicates that pyrolusites in the Eymir area have higher Mn content and lower Fe content which might indicate that the deposit at Derbent is closer to the spreading center (Öksüz, 2011a, b;Öksüz and Okuyucu 2014).…”

“…The ophiolitic sequence in the Birjand area (east of Iran) is comprised mainly of ultramafic rocks and indicates a well-developed mid-oceanic to suprasubduction ophiolite complex of Mid-Cretaceous age (Zarrinkoub et al, 2012). The geologic context and ore-host rock relationship of this ophiolitic sequence are similar to those of the Wazirestan (Shah & Moon, 2004 in Pakistan, the Artova (Oksüz & Okuyucu, 2014) in Turkey, and the Abadeh-Tashk (Rajabzadeh et al, 2017) and Baft (Heshmatbehzadi & Shahabpour, 2010) in Iran. No investigation has been conducted on manganese deposits to the south and southeast of Birjand (South Khorasan province) so far.…”
