Mineralogy and heavy metal assessment of the Pietra del Pertusillo reservoir sediments (Southern Italy)

Abstract: The Pietra del Pertusillo freshwater reservoir is a major artificial lake of environmental, biological, and ecological importance located in the Basilicata region, southern Italy. The reservoir arch-gravity dam was completed in 1963 for producing hydroelectric energy and providing water for human use, and nearby there are potential sources of anthropogenic pollution such as urban and industrial activities. For the first time, the minero-chemistry of the lake and fluvio-lacustrine sediments of the reservoir hav… Show more

“…Additionally, the concentrations of As and Pb in a reservoir were influenced by soil erosion and by anthropogenic sources in the catchment. Buccione et al [99] analyzed HM concentrations in Pietra del Pertusillo reservoir in Italy and indicated that contamination by Cr, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb is mostly driven by geogenic processes. A high concentration of As is considered as the most relevant for the environment and health, is highly toxic in its inorganic form, and can have immediate toxic effects for human health.…”

“…The sources of the sediments are many and varied. Hence, sediments are heterogeneous assemblies of multiple phases, such as organic matter, clay minerals, oxides, sul des, and carbonates, which are carriers of polluting elements mainly through adsorption (Buccione et al, 2021;Miranda et al, 2021). The quality of sediments is a signi cant environmental indicator of water pollution (Gargouri et al, 2018;Tokatli, 2019), as sediments are a nal or temporary sink for various types of pollutants, including the elements discharged to the environment (Saydam Eker, 2020; Chen et al, 2022).…”
