“…Although these complex cognitive processes are involved in fostering emotional concern and motivation to care for and help others, affective‐based motivational processes are distal outcomes to more proximal cognitive tasks within the neurological models of empathy and helping behaviors (Decety, 2011). Engagement in practices intended to foster compassion and interpersonal connection, such as loving‐kindness meditation (Fulton, 2016; Leppma & Young, 2016), relational mindfulness practices (Surrey & Kramer, 2013), or Insight Dialogue (Kramer, Meleo‐Meyer, & Turner, 2010) may yield changes in the bond component of the working alliance (Johnson, 2018).…”

“…To help counselor educators, future researchers should continue to examine the relationship between frequencies of counselor mindfulness practices and relationship factors. Certain mindfulness activities may differentially influence specific components of the therapeutic relationship associated with complex cognitive processes (Davidson & Kaszniak, 2015) or affective‐based motivational processes (e.g., loving‐kindness meditation; Fulton, 2016; Leppma & Young, 2016). Determining whether specific mindfulness practices have differential influences on various components of the therapeutic relationship could inform best practices for incorporating mindfulness into counselor education and help counselor educators individualize mindfulness‐based practice strategies for CITs.…”
